Dawson City, Yukon Territory

To get here we had to cross the Yukon River, a fast moving, muddy brown stream of water, on a provence-run, free ferry.  Do you think there are any free ferries anywhere in the US?  It holds about 5 cars and it's the only way to get into Dawson City from the north side of town.  The town has been preserved from it's gold rush days with dirt streets and boarded sidewalks everywhere.  The buildings would make a perfect set for a western movie, even with saloons and brothels.  You expect to meet Jack London walking down the street.  It's a very quaint and neat place.

We are staying on the second floor of an old Victorian boarding house called Peggy's Bombay Inn and it is truly lovely.  We have gone from our worst to our best place to stay in the course of twenty-four hours.  Peggy operated the house as a brothel until they shut her down in 1961.  It has all been modernized, but still maintains the original flavor of days gone by.  It's perfect and we are happy here.
The roads here are lined with Alpine Lupine and Dandelions, the magenta and yellow making a constant contrast as we travel along.  Further back from the road are mile after mile of dark green Lodgepole Pines.  The Yukon and British Columbia are covered with massive forests of these trees...millions of acres of them.
